Interior of North Christian Church, 1964. Columbus, USA. It is another example of a collaboration between Eero Saarinen, Dan Kiley and Alwxander Girard. Saarinen died three years before the church was completed.
Sitting at the center of the hexagonal sanctuary is a substantial communion table, ringed by 12 seats for the church elders. Throughout the year, the cushions on these seats will transition from green to red to purple to white, in step with the liturgical calendar. This mirrors an idea Girard incorporated successfully in the Miller’s home. Read more IMA
I love this building, it was my childhood church. The sanctuary also sits at the center of the church, with classrooms, offices and a baptismal area oriented around it. And, likewise, in the lower level, the fellowship hall is at the center. Another fun detail is that the sanctuary ceiling doesn’t actually touch the sides of the sanctuary, there are windows that go all the way around. The ceiling only nests fully on the outside walls of the building. The 12 seats are mentioned, but there are also 13 pillars at the center of the sanctuary from which communion is served to the congregation. 12 representing the apostles and 1 which holds a cross representing Christ.
